City streets and pit villages

County Durham ranges from the historic streets around the cathedral to former pit villages, market towns and large estates such as Newton Hall and Belmont. Many villages are lined with brick terraces built for mining families, while newer developments around Bowburn and Framwellgate Moor are much more recent.

Terraces and village homes

Brick terraces in the old pit villages often have small, deep window openings and front doors straight onto the street. Properly measured casement windows and a new composite door make these homes warmer and quieter.

Estates

On Newton Hall, Belmont and similar estates, anthracite windows with a matching door give a plain front a sharper look. The house in the photo has them from the ground floor up to the dormers.

Durham city centre
