The boards that protect your roof edge

The fascia is the board along the edge of the roof that the gutter is fixed to. The soffit is the board underneath it, closing the gap between the wall and the roof. Bargeboards do the same job on the sloping edge of a gable. Together they keep weather, birds and pests out of the roof space.

On older houses these boards are usually timber, and after years of North East weather the paint flakes, the wood softens and the gutters start to sag. uPVC replacements don’t rot and only need an occasional wash.

Signs your roofline needs replacing

  • Peeling paint and soft, spongy timber along the roof edge.
  • Gutters that sag, drip at the joints or overflow onto the wall.
  • Gaps where birds or wasps are getting into the roof.
  • Damp patches on bedroom ceilings near the outside wall.

Full replacement, not covering up

A cheaper approach is to cap old timber with a thin uPVC cover board. That hides the rot rather than dealing with it, and the timber underneath keeps decaying. We prefer to strip the old boards out, check the rafter ends and fit new uPVC boards that are fixed properly. If you’re offered capping, ask what condition the timber underneath is in.

Ventilation

A roof space needs air moving through it, or condensation can build up and cause damp and mould. Vented soffits or over-fascia vents keep air flowing, and we’ll include them where your roof needs them.

Usually done with new gutters

Gutters are fixed to the fascia, so it makes sense to replace them at the same time. See guttering and downpipes.

Common questions

Can’t see your question? Call 07733 408235 and ask.

How long does a fascia and soffit replacement take?

It depends on the size of the house and how much needs replacing. We’ll give you a timescale with your quote.

Do I need scaffolding?

Most roofline work needs safe access along the roof edge. We’ll explain what access is needed for your house when we quote.

Can you match my new windows?

Yes. Anthracite or black roofline looks sharp with matching windows, and white suits most houses.
